Remington Model 572 Fieldmaster History
A serial number is printed on the receiver of each Remington rifle or shotgun, provided it's a newer model. Serial numbers were not a requirement until 1968, so older firearms may not have serial numbers. You can still use the two-letter code on the barrel of the rifle or shotgun to look up the firearm's age.

- The Fieldmaster 572 production was discontinued by Remington in 1979. The full choke/cylinder bore barrel is extremely effective at moderate distances and the 22lr for longer ranges or bigger varmints. The Remington Fieldmaster, Model 572 was found to be and is, remarkably accurate for a smooth bore.

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer’s rifle.
Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.
